Sand Wash Basin Mustang | Born 2008

Loretta arrived at Great Escape just before Christmas in 2012, along with a group of mares from Colorado's Sand Wash Basin. The timing made her arrival especially memorable, but the story of how she came to us is what makes her place in our sanctuary herd so meaningful.

She was gathered from Sand Wash Basin as a young foal in 2008 and spent the next several years at the BLM's Cañon City holding facility. By the time she came to Great Escape, she was five years old and had spent much of her life in captivity.

Like several of the other mares who arrived with her, Loretta entered our training program with the hope of eventually finding an adoptive home. After a few months of working with her, however, we determined that sanctuary would be a better fit.

Today, she lives freely alongside some of the very same horses she grew up with. After spending her early years in holding, she now enjoys the freedom to roam, graze, and maintain the familiar friendships that have been part of her life for so many years.

For Loretta, sanctuary meant more than simply finding a safe home. It meant having the opportunity to return to a more natural life, surrounded by horses she's known since childhood.
