Sand Wash Basin Mustang | Born 2008

Helen is one of our Sand Wash Basin mares, born wild in the open ranges of northwestern Colorado in 2008. She came to Great Escape in 2012, along with several other mustangs from the same herd management area, many of whom she had known since she was just a foal.

From the beginning, Helen made it pretty clear that she had little interest in people or the expectations of domestic life. Unlike some of the other horses who showed curiosity about training and human interaction, Helen preferred to keep her distance and remain wild. Rather than ask her to become something she wasn't, we decided that sanctuary was the best place for her.

One of the most special things about Helen's life in sanctuary is that she continues to share it with horses she's known since her earliest days. Those longstanding relationships are an important part of her world, allowing her to maintain the familiar bonds and social connections she developed in the wild.

Today, Helen enjoys life on the 900-acre sanctuary, living freely among her longtime companions and remaining every bit the wild horse she's always been.
