Wynonna
Sand Wash Basin Mustang | Born 2008
Wynonna came to Great Escape in 2012 as a five-year-old mare from Colorado's Sand Wash Basin. Like so many of the wild horses we've welcomed over the years, she was given the opportunity to transition into domestic life, but ultimately found that sanctuary was where she belonged.
Alongside fellow Sand Wash Basin Mustang Regal G, Wynonna was adopted into a home committed to giving both horses the time and training they needed. Their adopter worked with experienced mustang trainers for nearly two years, patiently exploring whether the horses could become comfortable with the expectations of domestic life.
Despite those efforts, it became clear that Wynonna would be happier living as a wild horse. Her adopter made the thoughtful decision to return both horses to Great Escape, where they could join our sanctuary herd and live without the demands of continued training.
Today, Wynonna enjoys the freedom of the sanctuary, surrounded by other mustangs and living life on her own terms. Her story is a wonderful example of how a successful outcome doesn't always mean adoption. Sometimes, it means recognizing when a horse is happiest simply being wild.
