shooter
West Douglas Mustang | Born 2012
Small in stature but certainly not in personality, Shooter has never been a horse to underestimate! Born wild in Colorado's West Douglas Herd Area in 2012 and gathered in 2015, he arrived at Great Escape with a fierce independent streak and absolutely no interest in becoming a domestic horse.
From the beginning, Shooter made his feelings about human interaction perfectly clear. He would pin his ears and charge anyone who entered his corral, leaving little doubt that training was not something he intended to participate in. Even among the horses he shared his corrals with, Shooter quickly established himself as the leader, despite being the smallest of the group.
When the decision was made to release him into our sanctuary herd, his introduction wasn't exactly peaceful. There was plenty of posturing as he worked to establish his place among the other horses. But true to form, Shooter wasted little time making it known that he wasn't one to be pushed around, and the herd soon figured that out too!
Today, Shooter continues to live life on his own terms, with the same bold personality that made him such a memorable horse from the very beginning. He's a wonderful example of why sanctuary is so important for mustangs who have no desire to give up their wild ways.
