Onaqui Mountain Mustang | Born 2009
Once known as Black on the open ranges of Utah's Onaqui Mountains, Onyx was one of two iconic stallions whose lives changed dramatically in September 2019. Alongside another stallion known as Cremello, later named Onaqui, he was gathered from the wild, leaving behind the freedom, familiar landscape, and social connections of his home range.
The two stallions eventually found their way to Great Escape, where they were given the opportunity to return to a more natural life in sanctuary. With their strikingly different appearances, Onaqui's nearly white coat and Onyx's deep black coloring made them an unforgettable pair.
For years, the two shared their lives in sanctuary, a connection that made their story particularly special. Sadly, we lost Onaqui in the summer of 2026, leaving Onyx as the remaining member of this remarkable pair.
Today, Onyx continues his life among the sanctuary herd, carrying with him a history that stretches from the wild ranges of Utah to the pastures of Great Escape. While we deeply miss Onaqui, we're grateful that both horses were able to experience the freedom and security of sanctuary after their removal from the wild.
Onyx remains a beautiful reminder of the horses we've promised to care for throughout their lives, and of those whose stories will always be part of Great Escape's legacy.
