kalypso
Sand Wash Basin Mustang | Born 2013
Kalypso was born wild in Colorado's Sand Wash Basin in 2013 and gathered from his home range in 2017. He came to Great Escape and entered our training program with the hope of preparing him for adoption. After several months of working with him, however, it became clear that Kalypso was better suited to life as a wild horse, so we made the decision to welcome him into our sanctuary herd.
But joining an established herd isn't always easy, and Kalypso had some work to do before finding his place. Over the course of several months, we watched as he navigated the complex social dynamics of the herd, gradually earning acceptance and establishing relationships with the other horses. It was a fascinating process to witness and a wonderful example of just how intricate wild horse social structures can be.
Today, Kalypso has found his place within the herd and formed particularly close bonds with fellow Sand Wash Basin mustangs Cortina and Indiana Jones (Indy). The three share a special connection, and Kalypso and Cortina, in particular, are often seen together.
After a challenging transition, Kalypso now enjoys the freedom and companionship of sanctuary, surrounded by horses who have become his closest friends.
