copper penny
Spanish Mustang | Born 2006
Copper Penny, affectionately known as Penny, is one of the more recognizable members of our sanctuary herd, thanks to her rare curly coat and distinctive markings. She's also one of our lead mares, playing an important role in the social dynamics of the herd.
Penny came to Great Escape from Caballos de Destino, a Spanish Mustang preservation ranch in South Dakota. When the ranch made the decision to close its doors, they needed to find safe, permanent homes for a special group of Spanish Mustangs. Great Escape welcomed them, and Penny has been part of our herd ever since.
Penny is a beautiful example of the unique heritage of Spanish Mustangs, a breed with roots tracing back to horses brought to North America centuries ago. Her distinctive coloring, dorsal stripe running along her back, and primitive leg barring are markings associated with these historic bloodlines. Add her unusual curly coat, and Penny is a particularly striking example of the diversity found within Spanish Mustangs.
Today, Penny enjoys life in sanctuary alongside her herd mates, where her distinctive appearance and established role as one of the lead mares make her very special indeed.
